Are you dealing with persistent musculoskeletal pain? Do you participate in activities that require you to perform repetitive movements, like sports? Then, you might benefit from active release techniques (ART), a hands-on approach that gets results.

Everyone develops “mysterious” pain every now and then. In reality, that pain does have a cause–and often, it’s an overuse injury. Overuse injuries develop due to repeated movements that strain the body’s soft tissue–the muscles, tendons, ligament, fascia, and nerves.

ART is a method for alleviating that strain, helping the tissue to heal so you experience less pain and restriction.

To learn about ART and how it might benefit you, schedule an appointment at Boost Physical Therapy and Sports Performance!

ART aims to break up adhesions: knots of scar tissue that develop in the soft tissue due to injury. These adhesions can cause pain and restriction in your muscles and joints. They also impact your nerves, leading to nerve-related symptoms like tingling or numbness.

During a session, one of our physical therapists will use their hands to locate areas of restriction and tightness. When they find abnormal tissue, they’ll manipulate it with their hands while asking you to actively move the affected area.

The exact techniques will vary based on your needs, but don’t worry: We’ll guide you through the process.

Some of the conditions that can benefit from ART include the following:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Sports injuries
